Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar-group mineral orthoclase. During formation, orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers. When light falls between these thin layers it is scattered producing the phenomenon called “adularescence”. Adularescence is the light that appears to billow across a gem.
Fun fact: The term “adularescence” has its origin right here in Switzerland. High quality moonstone was mined in the Swiss Alps, near the St. Gotthard Pass, formerly named Mt. Adular. The moonstone found there was called “Adularia”, named after the town. The name adularescence was used for the phenomena exhibited by the gem and the term spread by word of mouth and in print to gem dealers worldwide. As the moon cycles connect us to nature, the moonstone also reminds us that our lives also ebb and flow. Moonstone cultivates compassion and empathy. It helps us to tap into our intuition and enhances psychic abilities and clairvoyance.
The creative and intuitive power of feminine energy is activated by the moonstone. It can help us balance and cool down emotions and stress. It can also put us in tune with our feminine and feeling side. Moonstone energy is yin, introspective, receptive, and connected to our subconscious. Moonstone has classically been given to brides and girls entering puberty in many cultures. Moonstone works strongly on the emotional body and with the digestive and reproductive systems.
